So it was on to Fortress Wakefield for BNU’s first home match of the season. This was against Waterside Karori who Brooklyn had had reasonable success against in the 2006 season. There was no shortage of motivation for this game after the hiding BNU had received on Saturday.
Barrie and John had shuffled their limited pack with several changes from the Saturday line-up. Sandy A had been bought on to the bench and there were a few position changes for the players to adapt to also.
Continuing the movie theme, this match can be compared to the movie
‘JFK’. A story of a charismatic leader, with a team of limited
experience, thrown into the deep end, who were ultimately undone by two
very lucky, long range shots. Or in the case of this match, two very
moody, hit and hope lobs into the BNU penalty area that caught out a
poorly positioned and slightly vertically challenged Brooklyn keeper to
both fall into the goal courtesy of the woodwork.
The other goal was more a remake of The Ten Commandments, or at least
the scene whereby Moses parted the Red Sea, in this version portrayed
by the Brooklyn defence, for the Wharfies striker to finish very well
from 20 yards.
Again there were positives to be taken from this match with Brooklyn
defending well in the first half to go to the break at nil-all.
However, there was little attacking endeavour from BNU during this time
with the Wharfies keeper not called on to make a save. Some of the
less kind BNU supporters wondered aloud whether BNU’s reluctance to go
near the Waterside penalty area was due to the Wharfies keeper’s
continued selection of a short-sleeved, skin-tight, little pink number
as his playing attire and the inference that may be taken from this
regards his desired choice of conjugal partner. While this may well be
true the lack of any constructive offensive threat does not bode well
for the rest of the season.
So another heavy loss sees BNU looking forward to next weekend’s game
against Tawa at Redwood Park as the next attempt to get their season
back on track.
