| BNU Pretenders v Petone Pumas 17th July 2011 |

Well, what can I say... it's not every day we forget how many goals we have scored or who scored them! Going into this game we were quietly optimistic as this Petone team hadn't scored a goal yet this season. However, they'd only lost their last game 2-0 so we couldn't be complacent. We were on the attack early on with Wendy in particular making numerous charges down the wing and putting in shots but unfortunately not scoring. After about 15 minutes a shot of Wendy's rebounded off the post and Liz booted it at goal but the keeper got to it. Luckily she also spilled it and Naomi managed to tap it past her and open the scoring. After that, it wasn't long before Cat got on the score sheet. Naomi scored again with a shot that looked like it would go wide but managed to curl in. Jacqui and Wendy continued to do great work with Jacqui in centre mid and Wendy continuing to attack. Then Jess, who had been off for a bit, came back on and decided it was time to get her mojo back, which she did in spades. By half-time she had scored a half-trick all in the final 15 minutes of the first half! Although there were a few breaks down the wing and possibly one corner, Toni had a very quiet half indeed. At half-time we were struggling to recall the goals so Daniel decided to mix it up a bit in the second half. Cat decided to give Jess a run for her money for the golden boot and scored several times in the second half with Jess getting another in before moving to the defence to give some of the defenders a chance to score. Wendy was again hugely unlucky but Celia's turn up front paid dividends after a great one on one with the keeper. Perhaps because we were beginning to feel a bit guilty, were playing out of position or were getting a bit lazy, Petone managed to get on the attack much more in the second half. Eventually after a good spell of pressing up the field they got the ball to Ainsley (who, incidentally, had trained with us earlier in the season) and she got a stunning long-range lobbing shot over Toni. Although disappointing that Toni wasn't going to end with a clean sheet despite all indications to the contrary, it was great to see Petone so joyous as it was their first ever goal of the season, and a good one at that. The goal certainly energised Petone which meant that we had to step up with the defence. We managed to keep them out and in the last 2 minutes of the game it really looked like Anita might also get on the score sheet. It wasn't to be but I think Cat scored yet another before the final whistle meaning the final goal tally was Cat 5, Jess 4, Naomi 2 and Celia 1 and the final score 12-1 to BNU with a much-needed boost for our points and goal difference and putting us at second on the table at the time of writing*. Daniel refrained from picking a player of the day because we were all equally awesome. The BNU Central League team who was playing Karori on the next pitch ended with a very similar score (13-0) but, sadly, it was not in their favour. *Admittedly, two scores were yet to come through at the time of writing but... hey, we'll take what we can.
