GONE WITH THE WIND AND MUD…
These write-ups will be short and sweet… sorry! I think I’m fading, and writer’s block is hitting me as the sun sets on our footballing season…... :-(
RADLERS 2 – BNU PRETENDERS 1 (8TH August)
We were on the turf again and playing against the Wellington Radlers with a late game… and we definitely thought we had a win in us (once again, the wind came to play too, we just weren’t sure whose side it was on…!).
My memory is a bit hazy but as usual, those near-misses come to mind… lots of long range balls that Jo and Jess are oh-so-good at running on to but they didn’t pay off – surely it was just a matter of time? Against her better judgement, Jules took a punt from outside the box with a high, hard, loopy shot and luckily the wind got hold of it and it dipped… is it going in????? Nope – the woodwork came to the Radlers’ rescue…. After 40 minutes, we were starting to get a bit grumpy but thankfully, Jess delivered by getting on the end of a diagonal ball into the box which gave us a 1-0 lead. Nice.
After half time, we were pumped, and managed to keep hold of our lead for some time……. Just not long enough and the Radlers surprised us with a couple of quick goals at the end of the game. (Their goals weren’t anything to write home about though – so I won’t).
UNIVERSITY 0 – BNU PRETENDERS 3 (15TH August)
Well, it was a cold, wet and muddy Sunday morning as our girls donned their studs and pulled their socks up – bring on the youngsters!
But the youngsters had other plans and decided to bring their best goalkeeper to the game… aaargh! She continually thwarted our efforts as we bombarded her box with some superb attacking play. Lots of long balls over their defensive line…. lots of corners…. lots of shots on target… we even got a penalty, and she dived the right way…. Man she was annoying…..!!!!
![]() And so it was that at half time, it was still 0-0… urgh. Luckily for us, even their goalkeeper isn’t completely fallible, and after about 15 minutes in the second half, Wendy broke our duck. It was a familiar sight to see the ball ping ponging around the box before it fell nicely at her feet, and she wasted no time in lobbing the defence, bouncing the ball into the bottom right hand corner (just out of reach from their super-keeper… yay!).
Then, Univerity’s second mistake – they decided to change their keeper!?? She wasn’t even injured…. Our readers will be glad to know that a hungry BNU team took full advantage, and extended their lead with another two goals. To cut a long story short, Jess expertly chipped the keeper, and Jo got on the end of a corner and powered it into the net. Result!
And so we retired for crisps and popcorn back at the university club house (what, no beer?!?). Victory was ours, and newly-married Liz was nominated our player of the day (thanks to her fantastic mid-field magic…!).
Job well done…. :-)
Jules
