Wainuiomata v BNU Pretenders 29th August 2010
Match Reports

THE FINAL CURTAIN…

3-2

Aaah well – here we were again – heading over the hill to Wainuiomata.  Always a nice pitch, and we were greeted with the familiar sight of a bunch of girls in green and black… and a lot of rain and mud.  Bring it on!!!

We did really well and got off to a brilliant start with an attacking move to be proud of.  Jules got on the end of an early ball from Jo and fired it past the keeper – 1-0.  There was plenty of other first half action too, with Maria running onto several long balls but none of them paying off as the Wainui defence closed ranks.

And so the rains came down, and the wind was blowing.  These conditions often suit us, but apparently the Wainui girls are familiar with those too… and it wasn’t long before the equaliser… 1-1.  Once more, my memory is hazy but I vaguely remember a really lucky corner that just fell at the feet of a nicely positioned attacker (every goal counts though…).  It is at this point that I should acknowledge that their number 6 was good, and she seemed to play all over the place (attack, defence, mid-field… surely she must have been tired and could have been subbed off???).  In between all of the action, there must have been another goal from the Ziggys, but once more, my memory escapes me…. Enough said that, some time into the second half, we went down 3-1 to the Wainui team – bummer.

But our spirits were never down – our defence was solid with Toni, Jacqui, Shazza and Jenny Moore doing us proud.  We also kept up the forward pressure and about 15 minutes before the end, our luck turned with a great attacking move.  Our midfielders were all over the place with the combination of Jo, Liz, Meg, Naomi and Wendy bringing the ball towards the box… and Wendy took full advantage, passed it to an unmarked Jules who turned and shot – result!  3-2… a draw was in our sights...

But in the end, it was not to be, and despite our best efforts we just couldn’t turn it around… maybe we’ll get our revenge next season…???  We can take some pleasure in the fact that our much-improved side has played some fantastic football this season, with the possibility that Jules might get the ‘golden boot’ now a realistic possibility…. I guess we’ll find out at prize-giving…!  Either way, lets say for argument’s sake she managed to do it (see inset)… :-)

It is at this point that I have to say a fond farewell on the footballing season, and possibly BNU, as I can hear England calling me home… :-(  Nothing is definite yet, but either way, I will be avidly following future match reports…

Go BNU Pretenders!!!!
