Womens Premier vs. Marist at Kilbirnie Park - 27.4.08 PDF Print E-mail

Aaaahhhh Marist.  The traditional foe.  I mean let’s be honest, we hate Marist, and we hate Marist…we are the Marist haters, so it was with much enthusiasm and vigour that we took to the field at Kilbirnie in an effort to waste Marists face and continue our premier league journey towards success.
Obviously the dreadful lack of match reports for our prior games means that one may not be aware that we are in fact very competitive in this premier division.  One minor blip at the start of the season has been well and truly remedied and with a draw and a comprehensive 4-0 win last week, we went into today’s game with a fair amount of confidence.  It appeared that the confidence was having a positive effect on our play as we quickly scored an opener thanks to some meticulous play down the right flank and then followed it up in no time at all with a second -  a fantastic header from an equally fantastic cross meant we were sitting pretty at 2-0 up after about fifteen minutes.  Unfortunately our attractiveness didn’t last long.  We somehow managed to transform ourselves into something reminiscent of a toothless Island Bay player as our play became quite literally, ugly.  I said it in the team speech and I’ll say it again (because it was bloody genius) but basically the sun came out after our two goals and then the black cloud that IS Marist decided to rain on our parade.  Bastards.  Admittedly there were certainly some defensive lapses…people getting caught in no-mans-land…midfielders that thought they could mark-up players in the eighteen yard box from half way…that kind of thing.

The bottom line was that while we were busy thinking we were choice they scored a couple of good goals and we found our two goal lead had quickly evaporated into a vapour of jack shit.  With our heads starting to droop another devastating blow was struck when Stacy’s hand struck the ball inside the penalty box.  A word that rhymes with struck certainly came to mind as we waited for the little Irish leprechaun from Marist to take the penalty.  A hop a skip and kick later she had managed to squeeze it past Niki who almost pulled off a super save.   3 – 2 down and regardless of anyone’s efforts we had now squandered a two goal lead and were staring down the barrel of a total face job.  The half time whistle was received with relief.

Into the half time talk and we were in serious need of some pepping up…John delivered and anyone that was on the verge of slipping into a severe depression as a result of the appalling state of affairs that was the first half went back onto the field almost feeling as though they could perhaps possibly come away with a result.  We started the second half positively.

A couple of pairs of fresh legs immediately had an impact as we regained our composure and the belief that we should win this game.  Our very expensive French Canadian import had finally turned up to game under hung and was a pleasure to watch…Il y a un autobus pour la biblioteque?? Non! The bus that emilie was on was only headed in one direction and the only books in that library were on how to score goals.  She out ran the Marist monster at the back and thanks to some deft touches and crosses from Cat and Jacks scored the double that BNU desperately needed and wanted.

4 – 3 then was the final score and despite a brief patch of playing like stiff twits on a foosball table BNU came away with a superb result.  A result that should see us sitting close to the top of the premier league…feel free to come along and see how it’s all done next Sunday at Karori Park.

Another cracking match report bought to you by the knockout…
