Without a doubt this was a clash eagerly anticipated by all the BNU players. Come 2:30pm Saturday we would be playing on what was tipped to be the pitch of the season and the surface was the topic of conversation early in the week leading up to the game. But like many fields in the capital, it couldn’t cope with the consistent rain and Karori number 1 was underwater.

On to Karori number 2, and this wasn’t much better. With surface wetting according to Young’s equation (gsv = gsl + glv cosq) being so high, the expansive passing to feet style of play BNU worship would not be possible as the ball refused to move more than a metre along the deck. As the officials assessed whether play would commence, both teams prepared for a long ball game and players replaced their boots with the 9 Iron, as chipping the ball about was the only option.

Come 2:30pm the whistle blew and BNU’s water fight with Wharfies commenced. This week’s movie without a doubt is the 1992 cult teen hit “The Cutting Edge.” Professional ice hockey star Doug Dorsey, played by D. B. Sweeny, knew how to skate the ice, but fell over many times when attempting to figure skate and BNU reflected this. BNU know how to play sexy football, but when conditions required a new game plan, BNU recognised the long ball was needed, but fell over (literally) when relapsing to the passing game.

With the pressure mounting as a result of some short passes not working, Wharfies won a corner and scored with a header at the near post. 1-0. BNU after this began to get the ball above the deck and played some nice football considering the conditions and had a few snapshots on goal. Sadly with the pitch holding the ball up, Wharfies ran on to a long ball down the right wing, cut the ball across and having acres of space and time, the ball was sublimely placed into the top left corner. 2-0 and the score remained the same at half time.

The second half began with BNU grasping the game plan and got the ball to the corners for the wingers to run on to the held up ball, with some early pressure going on the Wharfies defence with good work from Sam Buckle to direct play. Shortly after BNU’s confidence was rising, the wind and rain returned slowing down play on both sides, as heat retention became a priority. Singles, making his first appearance since early in the season against his old club, warmed BNU’s spirits as he had a few close attempts on goal. However amidst the rain and wind, Wharfies began to apply pressure exponentially and the third and final goal came when a low cross skidded off the sprawling Dave Herman in goal, for a tap in at the far post. The game concluded with another downpour, BNU attacking on goal, and the borderline hypothermic players running for the changing rooms having never looked forward to a team shower more in their playing careers.

Final score 3-0 Wharfies which is a set back in the crusade to avoid relegation, but word on the street is be prepared for a seven out of seven winning streak starting with a 4-0 hiding off Tawa at fortress Wakefield on Saturday 23rd June.
